Print Shipping Labels from the Moon

Why are you not managing your in- and out-bound deliveries from the Canary Islands? Probably because you do not want to work while you are on vacation. But did you know that there are at least four reasons why it is good to be able to print shipping labels, or transport labels, from far (far) away?

Say that you, for some mysterious reason, have a warehouse on the moon but prefer to work from Copenhagen. Then it would be practical if you could create shipments and print shipping labels from your laptop or mobile phone from your favorite café in Nørrebro, would it not?

Or, to take a more down to earth example: Gotlandsägg.

Gotlandsägg delivers more than 500,000 eggs to grocery stores per day. Viktor Brobäck, Order and Shipping Manager at Gotlandsägg, lives in the town of Visby, on the Swedish island, Gotland. He works, however, in Stenkyrka, 10 or so kilometers north of Visby, in an office building right next to the company’s warehouse.

“I select pallet, package, or whatever we are shipping, and then I go to the address templates to book and print the shipment. It’s not remarkable at all, really.”

Gotlandsägg also has a large warehouse and distribution hall on the Swedish mainland, in Ruda, in the southeastern province of Småland. Brobäck has never set foot in Ruda. Yet he is the one who makes sure that shipping labels are printed to the right printer by the correct packing station in that warehouse, too. But he does not think that is something to get excited about.

“I select pallet, package, or whatever we are shipping, and then I go to the address templates to book and print the shipment. It’s not remarkable at all, really.”

Does this mean that you could work from the Canary Islands in the winter if you wanted to?

“Yes, as long as there is an Internet connection that I can use to access LogTrade. This is especially convenient if I were to be snowed in at home on a workday; then I can still make sure that shipments are created and shipping labels printed like they are supposed to be.

Ok, but Direct Deliveries from Outer Space?

The topic of shipping labels, or transport labels, and print management will probably never make headlines.

At least not until the SpaceX founder, Elon Musk, opens up a battery factory on the moon, maybe because science suddenly finds that gravity has positive effects on solar cell production, and realizes he needs a print management system that truly thinks outside the box. A “detail” he, of course, has not given a single thought before he is faced with the logistic practicalities concerning smooth transport management.

But is there even Internet on the moon? Yes, it appears that there will be soon. (Google it.)

However, you do not need to have a warehouse on the moon or believe that direct deliveries from outer space are the next big thing to appreciate a new truly innovative printing system for transport or shipping labels. This image explains why.
